From the underground dance clubs of 1950’s Memphis comes a story that shakes the rafters and stirs the soul — and YOU can be a part of it!
Join us this summer as we bring the Tony Award-winning MEMPHIS to life at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre — a high-energy, electrifying musical packed with explosive dance numbers, roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll, and a powerful story of love, ambition, and breaking barriers.
Inspired by real events, MEMPHIS follows a white radio DJ who wants to change the world and a black club singer chasing her big break, set against the backdrop of segregated Memphis. With an irresistible score by Bon Jovi’s David Bryan and a Tony-winning book by Joe DiPietro, this is a show that will have audiences dancing in their seats — and we need YOUR voice to make it happen!
Memphis The Musical calls for a diverse cast of powerhouse singers who can belt, dancers who can light up the stage, and actors ready to bring heart and soul to this thrilling production.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
Please note: Memphis requires a racially diverse cast, with strong singing and dancing ability across the board. Most roles require strong vocals and movement/dance skills.
HUEY CALHOUN - A quirky, socially awkward, and passionate white DJ with a deep love for Black music. Huey is bold, impulsive, and determined to change the world through music, despite his flaws. He’s rough around the edges, but full of charm and heart.
Vocal range: Tenor (C3–B4); strong rock tenor with soul.
FELICIA FARRELL - A fiercely talented Black singer with star power and ambition. Felicia is confident, elegant, and poised, with a warm heart and a strong will. She wants to be seen and heard in a world not ready for her voice.
Vocal range: Alto/Mezzo with strong belt (G3–A5).
DELRAY JONES - Felicia’s older brother and protective nightclub owner. He’s street-smart, cautious, and deeply loyal to his sister. A practical realist who understands the risks of crossing racial lines in 1950s Memphis.
Vocal range: Baritone (Eb3–Bb4).
GATOR - A bartender at Delray’s club who hasn’t spoken since witnessing a childhood trauma. Sweet and kind-hearted, Gator surprises everyone when he finally finds his voice.
Vocal range: Tenor (F#3–Bb4); strong falsetto helpful.
BOBBY - Janitor at the radio station and Huey’s good friend. A big personality with fantastic comic timing and major soul. A showstopper in his big number.
Vocal range: Tenor with strong gospel belt (G3–C5).
MAMA (GLADYS CALHOUN) - Huey’s strong-willed, no-nonsense mother. Initially skeptical of Huey's choices, she grows and transforms over the course of the show. A comic role with emotional depth.
Vocal range: Mezzo/Alto with belt (Bb3–D5).
MR. SIMMONS - Manager at the radio station. Initially conservative, but opens up to new ideas. A grounded authority figure.
Vocal range: Baritone (C3–A4).
